In 1945, the organization started awarding scholarships instead of prize money, making Miss America one of the first organizations in the U.S. The competition has evolved since the bathing beauty review was an act of rebellion during a time when women weren’t permitted to wear swimsuits in public. Representing each of the four points on the winner’s crown, the program honors “Style, Service, Scholarship and Success.” Participants of the Miss New Jersey competition acquire lifelong skills while earning scholarships, meet other like-minded women, cultivate their own personal style and engage with the communities they represent. The Miss America Opportunity is more than a one-night telecast and provides a unique opportunity for women to obtain scholarship awards. Miss New Jersey is celebrating 90 years, and its newly renamed parent organization, Miss America Opportunity is more than 100 years old. Additionally, the Miss New Jersey Teen final competition will be held 1 p.m.
